[The Japan Compatriot League]

The Japan Compatriot League was established in 1955 when local organizations of former members of the Imperial Japanese military were consolidated into a nationwide body, and from 1956 it adopted “The Japan Compatriot League (日本郷友連盟)” as its official name.

The League asserted the invalidity of the Constitution of Japan and consistently called for its revision. It supported former Prime Minister Abe, who had strongly advocated constitutional revision while in office, as well as legislators with backgrounds in the Self-Defense Forces.

In 2015, together with Kaikōsha (偕行社)—a society composed of former officers of the Imperial Japanese Army and former senior officials of the Ground and Air Self-Defense Forces—it published A Warning Against the ‘Constitution Without National Defense’. The book criticized the present constitution as deficient from the perspective of national defense and argued for the revision of Article 9. On its website, it also posted members’ essays and reports on League activities.

The organization was dissolved in July 2025, though some local branches have continued activities thereafter. One example is the Fukuoka Prefecture Compatriot League, which has sought to recruit new members beyond former military personnel and has continued its activities.
